When did you last PROVE that your backup works?

In most companies a backup is taken and left at that. The problem is simple: taking a copy is one job, being able to restore it is another, and the second cannot be known without trying. That a copy exists does not show it can be read; that it can be read does not show it is complete. This is why the right question is never "do you take backups" — it is "when did you last restore, and how long did it take". The second half matters too, because a recovery plan with an unknown recovery time is a guess.
